Following his time on the front lines of the conflict on Friday, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy traveled to Berlin for in-person discussions with American representatives: U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump.
The Ukrainian president has suggested that Kyiv might abandon its longstanding goal of joining NATO in exchange for security assurances from the West. Maria Tadeo, our EU news editor, will be with us to provide updates on the discussions and recent efforts to conclude the ongoing conflict.
Next, we will be joined by Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation. A French economist and climate diplomat, she previously served as France’s climate change ambassador during the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. In other words, she is the mastermind behind the Paris Agreement.
We will also consider the fatal attacks at Bondi Beach this weekend amid Hanukkah festivities. Political leaders throughout the EU have offered condolences to Australia, showing support for the victims and their loved ones. Our political reporter Stefan Grobe will provide the most recent updates.
Finally, our reporter Jakub Janas will discuss why this week’s gathering of EU leaders is seen as the most significant of its kind since the Covid crisis. Agenda items include: a loan for Ukraine to support the country over the next two years.
